Happy Tax Day!

Another April 15th, come and gone, here's hoping you got a refund and saved a portion of it! There's been a surprising number of articles and opinion pieces swirling around Tax Day this year. We thought we'd highlight some that jumped out at us, here's a sampling:

  • Mark Memmott from NPR recalls the now (mostly) extinct practice of keeping the post office open late on April 15th to accommodate procrastinators in need of stamps.
  • Derek Thompson at the Atlantic runs down how you pay your taxes and where your money goes...with charts!
  • The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says "thank you" to the thousands of volunteers that help striving Americans file their taxes for free at VITA and other free tax prep sites.
  • Timothy Lee says that our tax filing system makes identity theft all too easy. Make sure to pull a credit report every now and then using AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Pro Publica called out Intuit for lobbying to prevent automated tax filing. Jordan Weissman calls it "Sleazy." and Ezra Klein says you are "America's Worst Paid IRS Employee" and runs down the possibilities of automated tax filing.
  • Jeremy Scott blogs at Tax Notes and says that the Free File Alliance is bad for low-income taxpayers and should not be renewed.
  • Writing a guest post for The Ladder, Krista Comer from the Center for Social Development describes the Refund 2 Savings partnership with Intuit and how it is opening the door to savings for low-income Americans.
